biography

“Do what makes you happy. Have fun. Be smart. Don’t try to be something or somebody that you’re not. Stop and smell the flowers. Step out of the box every once in a while, you might like it. And please, don’t call us from jail.” Those are just a few of the many lessons that Lance Tabor and his wife Rachel planned on teaching their children. The couple had met when one morning when Lance was on his way to teach at a high school in Irvington, he had stopped by a coffee shop to get his usual cup of coffee when the new barista had accidentally spilled coffee on him. To make it up to him, she had invited him over to her apartment for dinner and since then, it’d been history in the making.

Now, lets forward to a year and eight months later when the couple were married, had moved into their own house, and were expecting their first child. They were thrilled to be starting their first family. They had the nursery ready, a name picked out, toys, and a hall closet full of diapers. The only thing that was left to give the child was advice and knowledge. They wanted to share some things that they were told by their parents, or advice that they had given to themselves, or even clippings that they had cut out from magazines. It was one month later that the couple welcomed their first child, a son whom they named Reagan. Two years later, the couple decided that they wanted to have a second child and they were blessed with a second son who they named Jefferson. When Jefferson was at the age of two, they decided that they wanted to try to have one more child and maybe have a little girl so that Rachel wouldn’t be as out-numbered in the house.

On a cold, December 12, 1986, Lance and Rachel welcomed their daughter, Kennedy Blake Tabor. Kennedy was a pretty easy baby to take care of. Sure, there were moments as she was growing up where she’d cry at all hours of the night to be fed, held, or changed. And then, there were the dreaded terrible twos. Lance and Rachel thought that with Reagan and Jefferson, they had experience with what to expect when a young child throws a temper tantrum, but when Kennedy turned two years old, they were pretty surprised that Kennedy had been a well-behaved baby.

Though she did fuss or throw toys in protest, the worst that she probably did was curse in front of her grandparents. In fact, the times that Kennedy was at her happiest was when she was either listening to music, playing with her brothers, spending time with her parents, or watching the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Her family had no idea what Kennedy’s fascination was with that movie. They had tried to get her into watching Disney movies and sing-a-longs, but they just didn’t seem to grab her attention. Whenever Willy Wonka was playing, then she would be jumping around and singing along with the Oompa-Loompas.

Life in Irvington for Kennedy was pretty interesting to say the least. She did very well in school and did not get into much trouble. Though, she kind of did not have room to get into trouble since her father was a teacher at her school and her older brother was a couple of years ahead of her so they pretty much had everybody keeping Kennedy in check. It wasn’t as though she needed it because she went to school just about every day and made pretty good grades. When she wasn’t in school, she was more than likely hanging out with her friends that she knew from school or had known growing up.

When she was sixteen years old, her mother had opened up her own café which she called Coffees, Teas, and Pastries (or C.T.P. for short.). Kennedy began working at C.T.P. as to put a little bit of change in her pocket. She first began to work at C.T.P. as a cashier, but slowly worked her way up to working as a barista. She actually enjoyed her job. Not only because she got to experiment with making drinks, but because it was also a good way for her to get to know a lot of people who stopped by. Kennedy found herself enjoying the café environment. Sure, there were the times where things would be hectic early in the mornings when people were rushing to work, but when things were slowly, she always enjoyed seeing people come in for drinks, sit back, relax, a talk to their friends.

Kennedy had graduated from high school in 2006, and instead of going to NYC or out of state to a four year college, Kennedy opted to enroll full-time at Westchester Community College while she figured out what she was going to do career-wise. She knew that she did not want to work a boring behind the desk nine-to-five job. There really wasn’t anything exactly that she was passionate about except for the fact that she loved working at C.T.P. and she also loved listening to music. But, she did get an idea of maybe one day opening up her own café that also functioned as a venue for performers such as musicians, poets, and comics, to come in and perform. Sure, that was a big dream and all, but she figured that she had some time to make it happen just as long as she planned everything right.

In May of 2010, Kennedy graduated from WCC with a degree in business administration. Kennedy had danced with the idea of going to a college to receive her Bachelors degree, but for the time being, she decided against it. She knew that having the education to back her up would benefit her in the long run when it came to opening up her own café, but she wanted to try to get some work experience under her belt. On top of that, she wanted to have more free time so that she could hang out with her friends, spend time with loved ones, travel, and most importantly, have fun without having to worry about school.
